What you need to know about Google’s Mobile-Geddon.
April 27, 2015
Google is constantly changing the way we interface with the internet. They make updates to their algorithms, and keep web professionals on their toes at all times.
On February 26, Google announced that they would be expanding their use of “mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal”. In short, this will affect “mobile searches … and have a significant impact on search results. Consequently, users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimized for their devices.”
In other words, if you have a mobile-friendly website, you will be favored higher in the result pages when someone uses Google on a mobile-device. Therefore, if your competitor has a mobile-friendly site (and you do not), they will be favored higher in the rankings!
To see if your website is mobile-friendly, paste your website URL into Google’s Mobile-Friendly Tester.
Here are some more facts about Google’s updated algorithm:
1. The new algorithm affects search results on mobile devices only. Therefore, search results on tablets and desktop computers will not be affected.
2. The mobile friendly algorithm is on a page by page basis. So even if only some of your web pages are not mobile friendly, some could benefit from this algorithm.
3. Once your sited has been redesigned to be responsive, Google will designate your site as “mobile-friendly” within a matter of hours (72 at most).
Third Wave Digital has the solution: responsive design. When you have a responsive website, the appearance and functionality will alter automatically according to the type of device someone is using to view the site.
